here's a few sites.

CharityWatch.org analyzes over 500 nationwide charities. It looks at both their IRS Form 9090 and audited financial statements and notes. "The audits are key because the tax forms are self-reported," Styron says.

CharityNavigator.org evaluates 5,300 charities nationwide solely on spending practices, whether they're efficient and "will be around for the long haul," Stamp says. "We don't care what their mission is, just how much they actually put to it."

Dec. 2 Beach Clean Up at Ocean Beach

On Sunday, December 2nd, John Butler Trio www.johnbutlertrio.com will be collaborating with Rock the Earth www.rocktheearth.org, Surfrider Foundation www.surfrider.org and Save the Bay www.savesfbay.org to clean up Ocean Beach in San Francisco. The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world's oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now has over 50,000 members and 80 chapters worldwide. The San Francisco chapter's Beach Clean-Up Program is one of the most successful of its kind. As a recipient of the Surfrider Foundation's distinguished "Clean Beach Award," this program has set the standard for other Surfrider chapters around the country, and increasingly, the world.

It would be great to get a good showing of people out for the clean up to show JBT just how much we care about our beaches. This will be a great event for all ages so bring the kids AND the grandparents! Bags for trash collection will be provided by Surfrider so all you need to bring is a willingness to help beautify Ocean Beach :-)

To participate in the San Francisco John Butler Trio environmental service project, write to tree@rocktheearth.org

And don't miss JBT at the Warfield later that night!

New Collaboration Tool for Volunteers, Volunteer Managers

I am a longtime volunteer at an animal shelter and am using a new on-line project management/collaboration Web-application in my work as a volunteer videographer/photographer (videoing animals for adoption). My photo and video files are very large and hard to transmit via email. These files are shared by me with our volunteer coordinator and others doing this work who use them to create "campaigns" on behalf of the animal to get them homes.

www.MyQuire.com is a free tool (the product is still in Beta and the company is seeking testers) for sharing digital assets, keeping the files out of everyone's email- great for file sharing among groups. It also does many other things: calendaring, task management and delegation, chat. And each person has a profile- taken from the ideas of social networking.

The company is reaching out to non-profits and small businesses to ask for their help in evaluating and helping shape the technology. Again, creating an account is free: www.myquire.com. Check it out if you do any kind of volunteer management tasks!

They do great work and are unfortunately very short of volunteers right now. Please please forward this notice and re-post it wherever you can. And/or consider volunteering yourself. They have a training coming up. I've done the training myself and it's very good--- informative, inclusive, and a great bonding experience with the other trainees too. Well worth the time.
Thanks!

Here's the notice:

Need to lease office space for non-profit in Downtown Berk

Hi there,

StandUp For Kids (a national nonprofit that does outreach to homeless youth) is in need of an office space in downtown Berkeley. As the new regional trainer I am starting from scratch setting up an office in the Northern California.

I need a small office to rent for under $800 a month in downtown Berkeley. My ideal situation would be to share a floor with other companies but with my own private office. I would love to have it be more community minded because being locked up all by myself in an office might drive me crazy!

If you don't know of a specific location but have suggestions on where to look (other than craigslist and the Tribune) I would greatly appreciate it!

Help needed at Harmony Festival in Santa Rosa June 9-11

Rock the Earth www.rocktheearth.org is a non-profit environmental advocacy org that brings together the music and environmental community. We will be having a table set up in the non-profit zone at Harmony Festival and I need some volunteers to help throughout the weekend. The purpose of the table is educate people about who we are and to ask them to sign up for membership. if they don't want to sign up for membership then we atleast try to get them to sign up for the email list so they can learn more about Rock the Earth. One of the perks of working at our table is that you often will get to talk with musicians who have heard about us and want to know how they can get involved.

If this sounds like something you would like to do, please send me a message with your contact info (email and phone) and when you plan to be at the festival. If you can work 1-2 hours any of the days that would be great!

if you have more questions about volunteering with RtE please let me know.

***Red Ride*** Volunteer Bicycle tour from Southern Oregon to carry prayers and support to hurricane-hit Louisiana! Please take a moment to read, Respond and Ride...

Traditional Prayer Stick carried by bicycle from Southern Oregon to Louisiana. Prayers offered to Louisianas hurricane and socio-economic impacted Biloxi-Chitimach Confederation of Muskogee tribes, and the Point-au-Chien Indian tribe.

Have you been listening to the story from many directions? Stories of people’s lives changed through communities ravaged by neglect and hurricanes. The stories of grass-roots organizations and collectives founded in neighborhoods where hope was being withheld, sometimes at gun-point. Have you felt the string carried by many people who have offered their time to help stitch things back together? Finding the end of the string has been a journey in it’s self for me.

On April 9th, the Red Ride, a ride of prayers, will commence to deliver a prayer stick to the Native American tribes of hurricane-hit Southern Louisiana. The Red Ride is a proposed vision to the creator from Naomi Archer director of Four Directions Solidarity Network and myself Benjamin Harlow an Oregonian. Embodied in a bicycle journey of 70 days, and thousands of miles. The Red Ride is proposing to carry a prayer stick to many Indian Nations, tribes, organizations, and people everywhere. The riders will ask permission to pass through the peoples land. Will offer the prayer stick to each tribe to carry through its land, and gain the prayers of their people. Local events will be scheduled or requested in areas the ride passes through, in coordination with the indigenous governments to build solidarity and illustrate the connectivity of issues from one tribe to the next. If we haven’t contacted your tribe about being a part of the Red Ride Prayer Run please take this as an invitation to contact us with your desire to help. Contact information is at the end of the article.

The Red Ride is in response to an appeal for help posted on January 25th to the Four Directions Solidarity Network website http://www.eswn.org from 4 tribes in Southern Louisiana. The Grand Coulie/ Dulac band, the Isle-de-Jean Charles band, and the Bayou Lafourche band, three bands of the Biloxi-Chitimacha Confederation of Muskogees, and the Point-au-Chien Indian tribe. Though their independence and fortitude has brought them through many disasters and Indian hardships. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita created an intense burden on the people, and storm assistance was requested The Four Directions Solidarity Network mission statement is a “grassroots organization that uses a community-based model to organize people, supplies and other forms of support in collaboration with indigenous leadership and communities.” Four Directions was founded in early October while Naomi Archer was working with Common Ground in New Orleans. When searching the storm ravaged south with medic Dave Pike, they encountered Native American tribes who had received very little federal help, if any. Her heart lies with indigenous wisdom, and she understands the way that the needs of these historically marginalized people can be met. Four Directions focus in Louisiana is: immediate relief and recovery of homes and community, long-term relief and recovery through rebuilding and placing on stilts the homes and community, and solidarity with cultural preservation, tribal empowerment, and autonomy goals.

When I offered to come down and help, and decided to ride my bicycle there, Naomi and I came up with the Red Ride proposal. My goals have been to reach out to communities and individuals who need assistance, and this year I wanted to learn more about Native Americans, a part of my heritage. When I read about Four Directions, it seemed to fit my goals.

Naomi and I have been working hard to setup the Red Ride, which will take shape organically as it finds its way past many Native American homes. The ride will travel from Ashland, Oregon, along the California coast, crossing Arizona from the southwest corner to the northeast corner and meeting New Mexico around “Four Corners”. The ride will then proceed into Oklahoma the home of the Five Civilized Tribes and leave along a southern route of the “Trail of Tears” through Arkansas and into Mississippi meeting up with the Natchez Trace trail and turning south. The Red Ride proposes stopping in Baton Rouge to meet with a prayer walk leaving from the Bayou tribes for scheduled media events. Baton Rouge, which means ‘Red Stick’, is the state capital and has both cultural and political significance as well as access to a wide range of media outlets.

We still need a lot of community support to make the Red Ride as effective as possible. Cyclists or runners are encouraged to join in for part or all of the Red Ride. Ride through you home-town with me, please contact your friends or groups with the information about the ride, so they can join in. Route information is posted to the website (below), and anyone can contact me, or Naomi Archer, before or during the ride. Community members who can lend a supporting hand on the bicycle route will be dearly appreciated. Home-stays to charge the batteries, or a yard to pitch a tent in, bicycle collectives who can help tune the machines, and community kitchens who can offer a healthy meal, are all being sought out. The ride itself has no major sponsors funding the daily expense I or other riders will incur. So if you can help out in any way, even just a comment of support or prayer posted in the journal will keep the riders encouraged and rolling along. The Red Ride website with journal, route information, and sponsor thanks is located at http://www.cloudforest.org/bicycleride and is being hosted by the Cloud Forest Institute. CFI is also the 501c3 fiscal sponsors of Four Directions Solidarity Network and the Red Ride. Financial donors of any ability can make a tax-deductible online donation through the Red Ride website, send a check to the Cloud Forest Institute made out to “CFI/ Four Directions”, or visit Four Directions website for item specific donations. We work in solidarity, sustainability, and peace. Thank You for your support and prayers.

It may just be that I'm new to Tribe, but I have an extensive background in science and the environment and would love to share what I can with the children of San Francisco and the Bay area, but cannot seem to find the right organization to join. I have very flexible work hours, tons of references and a true love of teaching and nurturing.

Any ideas for me...anyone???

Special Interfaith Habitat for Humanity Project

I belong to St. Ignatius Catholic Church in SF and I'm the coordinator for Habitat for Humanity volunteer days. We are currently involved in a special project of sponsoring a Habitat for Humanity home that will be built in San Francisco. The neat thing about this project is that the home is being sponsored by a coalition of varying religious organizations (my Church being one of them). We're coming together from different faiths to raise funds for the home. Our goal is to raise over $50,000. We will also be having volunteer days in which we'll be building side by side with people from other religions.

It's truly a beautiful project. If you're interested in learning more, please write to me and/or visit the Habitat site: http://www.habitatsf.org/interfaith.php

Hey folks,
I volunteer a lot and have realized that I want to work for a non profit. I know I'm going to get a huge paycut, but I'm prepared for that to have passion for my work. (I'm tired of pointlessly moving little numbers from one place to another - I work in Finance) Does anyone here have any pointers? I don't know what it takes to break into this industry.

hi, i have been involved in lots of nonprofit projects and know with the current economy that cash has gotten tighter. but lots of people are still looking for an opportunity.

i am interested as i should get a building wing decidicated to me for parking tickets. and my listing here details this project.

i also know at least music benefits for nonprofits that may need people so hopefully we will see something here by them.
Change U.S. Foreign Policy

FreedomForward.org is a new project dedicated to advancing
the struggle for freedom worldwide.

FreedomForward.org is looking for good graphic and web
designers who can volunteer their time to build the
framework for this project's website and Internet presence.

If you are interested in participating or learning more,
please email: coordinator@freedomforward.org.
Read on for details...

-Sanjeev
Coordinator, FreedomForward.org

FreedomForward.org Mission:

In countless countries, powerful rulers silence their
critics and oppose liberty. They create the very conditions
that lead to instability and terrorism. By standing with
those who seek freedom, we increase our safety and build a
better world.

Goals:

* Educate Americans about the struggle for democracy in
dictatorships that receive U.S. support.
* Draw the links between lack of freedom and terrorism.
* Build American solidarity with those in other nations
who seek peaceful, democratic change from within.

Background:

FreedomForward.org's founder has significant experience
advancing political change at a local, state, and national
level. Past successes include public interest lobbying in
Washington DC, environmental protection in California, and
civil liberties campaigns in the Bay Area. In the coming
months, FreedomForward.org will recruit a team of scholars,
researchers, and techies to build a platform for supporting
pro-democracy movements worldwide.

Does anyone want to be an MC, a stage manager, or a photographer or videographer at The San Francisco Theater Festival on July 25th?? Or do you know someone who might be interested? If so, please forward this message.

www.sftheaterfestival.org
Bill Schwartz, the organizer of the non-profit festival, told me that he was looking for some ACT people or some other theater-oriented folks who would like to either MC or host, or take photographs or videograph the event which will run from I believe about 10 AM to 6 PM on July 25th. Please pass this on to friends, and if interested, please call Mr. Bill Schwartz to see how you can get involved. I promised him I would pass this on to the folks I know...

Bill Schwartz' contact information: 415-291-8655
Volunteer Position Descriptions:
MCs Sought for Theater Festival
The new San Francisco Theater Festival is seeking Masters of Ceremonies (MC's) to officiate at nine venues at the Yerba Buena Gardens on Sunday, July 25, 2004 between 11 am and 6 pm. The MC's will introduce the performances (usually 15-30 minutes long) and provide information to the audiences as they assemble and as they leave the venue. The Festival will showcase almost 50 theater groups and solo artists in a marathon day of theater. The MC's will help make the transitions smooth and add structure to the performance lineup. Each MC would work from 3-4 hours. 18 MC's will be needed. Lunch provided. Opportunity to practice working alone before audiences, to ad lib, to have fun with the audience, and to meet many theater group people in the Bay Area. This is a volunteer position.

Stage Managers Needed for Theater Festival
The new San Francisco Theater Festival is seeking stage managers to oversee the nine venues that will be operating at the Yerba Buena Gardens on Sunday, July 25, 2004 between 11 am and 6 pm. The stage managers will ensure smooth transitions between performing groups, be sure that the next group is ready to go on, that the actors have the necessary information and props, that problems that might develop are communicated to the show managers and handled.

Each stage manager will oversee 2/3 venues for a 3-4 hour shift. Eight stage managers will be required for the day. This is an opportunity to gain experience with a large, indoor/outdoor festival, meet many of the area's theater people, and have a challenging and fun time solving problems and helping to make things go smoothly. This is a volunteer position.

Photographer
The new San Francisco Theater Festival is seeking two still image photographers and two video photographers to document the new event which will take place on Sunday, July 25, 2004 at Yerba Buena Gardens between 11 am and 6 pm. There will be 50 performing groups with short showcase presentations of from 15-30 minutes. The video should be of the high quality needed for broadcast television, although we will consider quality a notch lower if necessary. This is a volunteer position.
